Spirits of Weather

Animists believe that everything has spirit, including storms, lightning, rain, snow, hurricanes, tornados, even the tiniest whirlwind, or dirt devil.

Shamans are often called upon to protect their people from extreme weather. They do that by dealing with the spirit of each storm or the spirit of that type of storm.

Sometimes major weather events become personified. One example is Thunderbird. Another is Hurucan, the Taino (native people of Puerto Rico) word for the spirit of what we call hurricanes.

Ancient peoples recognized that each individual storm had a personality, just as we do today when we give each hurricane a human name.

More information coming soon on weather spirits.
