Other Shamanism Resources

There is a wealth of information available on shamanism for those of us who can't go live in an indigenous culture: web sites, books, workshops, CDs, DVDs, and much more. Many of these resouces will be reviewed elsewhere on the Shamanista site as well as listed here. Links to buying sources are provided where possible.

As this site grows, we hope to add podcasts, video and audio clips, and other downloadable files.

Books on Shamanism, Animism, and Related Topics

There are hundreds of books on shamanism and related topics. Not only are the sheer numbers of books intimidating, but many of the books are of very poor quality. Sometimes a bad book is worse than none if it is false or misleading.

Here are some of the best books on shamans and shamanism. In the following annotated book list of shamanism-related books, we've described and reviewed as many books as possible and presented only the ones that we feel or most useful.

CDs on Drumming, Journeying, Toning, and Chanting

There are quite a few audio CDs of sounds for journeying, including several of drumming and/or rattling. Other recordings made for shamanic journeying include singing, whistles, Tibetan bowls, digeridu, and various combinations of those.

We've also found books on the use of overtone chanting or toning for healing that include instructional CDs. They are included on this list as well as teh book list.

Click on the following link to view an annotated list, describing the CDs we've tried out and those we recommend. Information on where you can buy them is also included.

Shaman DVDs and Tapes

The following link leads to an annotated list of DVDs (and possibly some VHS tapes) about shamans and related topics.

Most will be documentaries of shamans at work. Some will be instructional, on topics such as drumming. Some may be shamanism-related or animism-related movies.

Shamanist and Animist Art

The art of indigenous peoples and animist/shamanist artists can sometimes convey the animist and shamanist worldviews in a way that we intuitively grasp even before we have experienced such visions ourselves.

In particular, the work of Susan Seddon Boulet continues to inspire many of us. It portrays the visionary world of animists and shamans far better than any words.

Drums, Rattles and Other Instruments for Journeying

People often ask what kind of drum to buy and where to find a good one. Others ask where to find other instruments that can be used for shamanic journeying. The following annotated list explains what to look for and lists a few good sources for drums, rattles, bowls, bells, flutes, and other instruments:

Cedar, Sage, and Other Supplies

Depending on where you live, it can be hard to find smudge sticks, white sage, charcoal tablets, and other supplies for shamanic work. The following annotated list of supplies and suppliers is provided to help you find them.

Web Sites and Blogs on Shamanism and Animism

There are literally millions of web sites on shamanism. Some are good; some are not so good. Here is an animated list of shamanism-related web sites and blogs that we think are helpful.

Shamanism Groups and Classes

There are many online groups, such as Yahoo and Google groups, and email lists devoted to shamanism and related topics. There are also Meetup groups, which organize on line but meet in person as well. This link takes you to an annotated list of shamanism-related groups that we've found to be helpful.

Other Interesting Web Sites

This section is for sites that are not directly related to shamanism but may be of interest to readers of this site anyway.

World Village is the web's leading site for family-friendly internet since 1995
