Spiritual Energy ProtectionEnergy shielding and protection are always important. They are especially important while journeying or doing any kind of ceremony. Metaphysical teachers say that the purer, stronger, brighter your spirit and intent are, the more they shine in the spirit worlds when you do metaphysical work. That attracts all kinds of spirits. Not all of them are benign. Some people seem to have protection almost automatically, perhaps because it was built in to their early training without much/any discussion, and they learned to put up protection without consciously thinking of it. Sometimes protection seems to be inherent in a person's character, karma, or personality, but it still is best to know how to do protection consciously. Everyone needs to know how to respond to unusual situations, teach those who need protection how to get it, and so on. In indigenous cultures protection is likely to be built into shamanic practice, so that it doesn't have to be discussed or learned separately. But for modern Europeans and Americans, brought up in a dualistic, materialist culture, such practices are generally not automatic. They are not traditional for us, and so we have to adopt and use them consciously. Protection is like any other skill. First you have to learn how, and then it takes conscious, systematic practice until it become automatic
GroundingPart of spiritual protection is grounding, which means that your soul is fully in your body. Your health and well-being in ordinary reality depend on it. Aware ness of your body prompts you to eat properly and care for yourself properly. Being fully in your body means being fully alert, which can save you from injury when operating machinery or walking on city streets. Although some metaphysical traditions teach that you should close down your lower chakras (and therefore be partially out of body) at all times, shamans don't do that. When not on spirit journeys, they are some of the most down-to-earth, grounded people you will ever meet. Grounding in daily life is partly a matter of being fully present. Be aware of everything in your environment, including the spirits of animals, peoples, and things. Don't zone out. After journeying or participating in a spiritual ceremony--or any metaphysical work--eat something as soon as possible. Animists know that, and they usually feast after ceremonies. That brings everyone fully back into their bodies and unites the community in their shared experience. Even in daily life, you can use eating to ground yourself. To do that, give your full attention to eating. Do not read, watch TV, or work on the computer while eating. After an illness when you have had fever, been dehydrated, or taken medications that made you feel fuzzy-headed, you need to ground yourself as soon as you are feeling well. Exercise can also be grounding if you allow yourself to be fully aware of your body. Pay attention to how every part of your body feels. "Tuning out" or ignoring pain takes you partially out of your body (out of the part you are ignoring). It also leaves you vulnerable to injury, especially stress injuries caused by overusing or straining muscles and joints. Being grounded means being fully aware. Personal Energy ShieldingOne of the first lessons any energy worker must learn is to shield one's own energy. All metaphysical work, including prayer and meditation, attracts the attention of spirits. When you pray, meditate, journey, heal others, or do any metaphysical work, you glow in the spirit world, and spirits, good and bad, come to see what you are doing. Not all those spirits are nice. This section will provide some methods for shielding yourself from spirits and from the feelings or intentions of other humans. It will also refer you to books, CDs, and other resources to help you learn how. Spiritually Protecting Your HomeProtecting your home environment is just as important as protecting your self, especially if you live with pets or other humans. Even if you have good personal shields, living or working in a very stressful environment can wear you down. Also, if your own shields are strong, any unpleasant thoughts or energy sent your way can slide off and contaminate the energy in your home or workplace. Such energy, though intended for you, can be harmful to those close to you, such as family and pets. Further, your household members may unknowingly attract or bring home unpleasant energy, so shielding the home helps keep life in tthe household safer and more pleasant for everyone. This section will provide some methods for protecting your home and workplace environments and also refer you to place to find others. Spiritually Shielding OthersChildren especially need protection, and often a parent's loving intent automatically provides it. But other people in your life, whether they live with you or not, may sometimes need your help in protecting themselves from unwanted spiritual influences. Sometimes you may be called upon to help defend someone from spiritual attack. That is a typical shamanic task. We'll provide a few methods here from protecting/shielding others and also some resources for other shielding methods. Spiritual Protection for Your CarIn some ways our car or other vehicle is an extension of our personal energy. In other ways it can be considered an extension of the household. In either case, because of its importance to your safety, your car, motorcycle, or other private transportation needs protection of its own. This section will provide methods for protecting your car or other vehicle. More information coming soon!
