Animists believe that [all things have|everything has] spirit, [even|including] storms, lightning, rain, snow, hurricanes, tornados, even the [smallest|tiniest] whirlwind, or dirt devil.

Shamans are often called upon to protect their people from [severe|extreme] weather. They do that by [dealing|working] with the spirit of each storm or the spirit of that type of storm.

[Often|Sometimes] major weather events become personified. One example is Thunderbird. Another is Hurucan, the Taino (native people of Puerto Rico) word for the spirit of what we call hurricanes.

[Ancient and indigenous|Native] peoples recognized that each individual storm had a personality, just as we do today when we give each hurricane [a human|an individual] name.
